w34.0☓d29.0×h27.3cm 1960s with a box appraised by Miwa Kyusetsu 11th
[ Description of the Work ]
Mr. Miwa Kyuwa, the 10th-generation head of the Miwa family—one of the most prestigious Hagi-yaki potteries dating back to the early Edo period—began to establish his own unique style after studying under Kawakita Handeishi. He also perfected a white Hagi glaze known as “Yukijiro” and went on to create Hagi-yaki pieces unlike any seen before.
This piece dates from the period when he went by the name Kyūsetsu the 10th. It depicts a majestic lion, with the white Hagi glaze applied in select areas.
It is a piece that conveys a sense of dynamic power, as if the lion is about to pounce, and showcases his exceptional sculptural skill.
The inside of the piece bears the 10th Kyūsetsu’s nail-carved signature. The inscription on the box was written by his younger brother, the 11th Kyūsetsu.
