[Description of the Work]

Master Kitanoji Rosanjin was one of Japan’s leading artists, a giant in the field who left behind numerous masterpieces across a wide range of disciplines—primarily ceramics, but also calligraphy, painting, and seal carving.
Taking “aesthetic living” as his creative theme, he overturned conventional wisdom regarding tableware and made his mark by developing an innovative artistic style.
This piece symbolizes Rosanjin’s broad-minded pursuit of beauty. It is a rare beer mug created during his final years, crafted from “Benishino”—a type of Shino ware characterized by its deep reddish hue.
It was exhibited at a large-scale retrospective held in 1972, 13 years after his death, and is featured in the deluxe illustrated catalog *Works of Kitanoji Rosanjin* (published by Tokuma Shoten), which was released around the same time.
It is considered a masterpiece and is said to be the most famous beer mug among Rosanjin’s works.
