Special exhibition - Figure -

 

During this special exhibition, we are showing various types of figures which were made of ceramic, wood and other materials.

Human-shaped figures have been appreciated as objects of veneration and admiration from the ancient period.

We are focusing on Modern and Contemporary artists' figures this time.

- MINGEI - HAMADA and KAWAI

During this October, we are holding a special exhibition focusing on Shoji Hamada and Kanjiro Kawai.

In this exhibition, we are focusing on their works made around post-war period.

Shoji Hamada
    浜田 庄司

1894 Born in Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture.


1916 Graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology.
         Entered Kyoto Ceramic Experimental Station.


1920 Visited England invited by Bernard Leach.


1924 Stayed in Okinawa and Kyoto after coming back in Japan.

1926 Began Mingei movement with Soetsu Yanagi and Kanjiro Kawai.


1931 Built ascending kiln in Mashiko, Tochigi prefecture.


1955 Designated as a Living National Treasure.


1968 Awarded an Order of Cultural Merit
.

1978 Passed away at the age of 84.

 

Kanjiro Kawai 河井 寛次郎

1890 Born in Aki city, Shimane prefecture.

1914 Completed ceramic industrial course at current Tokyo Institute of technology.

         Worked at Kyoto research institute for ceramics.

1920 Began ceramics at Gojozaka in Kyoto.
         Named his studio as 'Shokeiyo' (Shokei kiln)
.
         Produced pieces which got ideas from Chinese wares.

1922 Gained a great reputation after a solo exhibition in Tokyo.

1924 Influenced by slipwares.

1926 Involved with Mingei movement with Soetsu Yanagi and Shoji Hamada.
       
         Produced pieces of simple form with unique design. 


1937 Won a Grand prix at the Paris Universal Exposition.

1949 More creative pieces were produced afterwards.

1966 Passed away at the age of 76.

Emiko TAKIKAWA 瀧川 恵美子

1956  Born in Toyokawa, Aichi prefecture.

1977  Finished ceramic course at Tajimi industrial high school.

1980  Started working at a pottery in Tajimi, Gifu.

1990  Built own kiln in Ena, Gifu.

2006  Moved to Toki, Gifu.

2011  The first solo Exhibition at Ginza Kuroda Touen.
    (every year onwards)

Kazu YAMADA 山田 和

1954 Born in Tokoname, Aichi prefecture.
         The son of Kenkichi Yamada.

1976 Graduated from Osaka University of Arts.
         Moved to Fukui prefecture.

1988 Built Anagama kiln in Germany.
         Recorded a film of 'Born from fire'.

1989 Worked in Germany.

2003 Solo Exhibition at Ginza Kuroda Touen.
         (2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017)

Tatsuo OKURA   大藏 達雄

1952  Born in Minamikiso, Nagano prefecture.

1972  Entered in Craft and industrial course at Tokyo designer gakuin college.
     Apprenticed to the second generation of Jihei Murase.

1976  Back in Minamikiso. Became an wood turner, which is his family business.

1982  Built a studio in Shizuoka prefecture. Started Negoro painting.

2003  The first solo Exhibition at Ginza Kuroda Touen.
